Ryan Shoots First: Obi-Wan Kenobi (S1 Ep6)
Here we are folks, the finale of the Disney Plus Original How Obi Got His Groove Back. As the season has gone on this finale did an amazing job of tying up a ton of loose ends and “plot holes” many have been complaining about. But it also frees up Obi-Wan to forgive himself and move forward continuing to help others and go on more adventures if we are to get a Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2. He will still be checking in on Luke from time to time but as a great line in the finale says “he needs to just be a boy”.
This finale had me welling up multiple times as it tugs on some strings that have been left there in fans since the end of Revenge of the Sith almost 20 years ago. I certainly don’t want to spoil it for you in this section (come back and read my observations after!) but many of the things fans wanted from the beginning of the series they get in this finale. Enough can’t be said for the great job both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen did in this series. If you don’t know for Vader Hayden delivered the lines then they used respeecher tech to add the James Earl Jones sound to it. So it is Hayden and he nails it. I think it is the best Vader has sounded since Return of the Jedi. Their final duel is equal parts compelling and absolutely tragic. The way Ewan can switch from fear, to sadness to hope depending on who he’s sharing the scene with is amazing and he really has mastery over the character.
Last week we spoke a lot about Reva as a character and she as well gets a really great arch throughout the series. Adding in some of the twists of her backstory really helps us empathize with her plan, and while she may be telling herself everything she’s done has been to serve a greater purpose she is forced to reconcile with where that path has led her. It’s a path many Inquisitors had to face as we’ve seen in other media like Rebels and Jedi Fallen Order. The Inquisitors are not Sith and really aren’t trained to be, they are being used by the Emperor like so many others to serve a purpose and once done to be disposed of. I look forward to seeing what Reva does next in whatever medium it may be.
Who knows if we will get a season 2 but Ewan seems to be on board and with this season over it has given itself really a blank slate to send Obi-Wan on some fun adventures untied to Tatooine and even Vader. Maybe we can see him meet back up with Bo Katan in some sort of Mandalore/ Satine arch. Who knows but I hope this isn’t the end of his journey to A New Hope.
