Scene of the Week: Watchmen – Prison Fight Ass-Whoopin’
Zack Snyder’s directing career has been a real rollercoaster of emotions. One moment the fans and nerds are geeking out over Dawn of the Dead and how hot the chicks in Sucker Punch were, and then the next minute they are pissing and moaning about how he ruined the entire DC Universe of movies with his grim black and white version of some very colorful characters. I tend to enjoy MOST of the things he’s done but rarely get as worked up as these nerds about any of his properties even though I’ve spent the better part of my life reading the same materials as them.
Speaking of reading, most comic book folk will add Alan Moore’s Watchmen to their list of the “greatest comics ever written”. They might also add Watchmen to the list of “movies that can’t be made”. It’s a very strange story that includes Vietnam massacres, alien blobs, large blue dicks, and vigilante murderings so who could have imagined that Zack Snyder could make any movie sense out of it? Not me, I guess. So imagine my surprise when I not only liked Watchmen, but dare I say, loved it.
This has to be one of the most badass scenes in the entire film as Nite Owl and Silk Spectre enter the prison to rescue their fellow vigilante Rorschach and take down a whole bunch of rioting prisoners. Stars Patrick Wilson and Malin Ackerman look cool and their fighting look crisp as shit as they pound the ever-loving hell out of the bad guys. Thank God for good stunt men!
Completely agree with everything you wrote and forgot how great that scene was.
Thanks Andrew! I regret to say that I’ve still not watched the uncut super-long version of Watchmen but I will now!
