Scene of the Week: Game of Death – Bruce Lee vs. Dan Inosanto
If I were to describe the final act of Game of Death to a person that has never heard of it they would most likely die from the sheer excitement. Bruce Lee battling his way from floor to floor, taking on martial artists of different disciplines, with different weapons, and ones of various sizes.
Bruce Lee has become the Grandfather of MMA, the Father of modern martial arts movies, and what has to be the biggest unanswered question in regards to the combat sports; was he the baddest man ever? Unfortunately, we’ll never know. We do, however, have some surviving members of the early Jeet Kune Do community and people who were personally trained by Bruce, himself.
Dan Inosanto’s film career kicked off with Game of Death in 1972 and I’m not sure ever hit a higher point. He has gotten to mix it up with guys like Burt Reynolds, Steven Seagal, and was even in the totally awesome Big Trouble in Little China, but Dan’s mastery of various fighting styles has never made him look cooler than it does next to his teacher Bruce Lee. It’s clear during this scene that the fight was never in doubt, (and anyone who has ever seen a Bruce Lee movie knows that he never loses) but this segment of fighting between Bruce and Dan is still extremely entertaining to this day. Even if Dan didn’t explode in the world of film fighting, at least he got to have his magical swan song.
