An Interview with Gary Daniels
Gary Daniels’ latest action movie, Bring Him Back Dead, hits Digital and DVD on August 2nd (that’s THIS TUESDAY for those in the know). You can check out my review of Bring Him Back Dead by clicking here.
In addition to getting the opportunity to screen Bring Him Back Dead early, I had the pleasure of being able to shoot some interview questions to Gary Daniels. As a Gary Daniels fan from way back this was an absolute thrill for me and I think you will find as you read this interview that I asked him one question that he probably has never been asked before…
CTB: Over the course of your career you have had the opportunity to play both the hero and the villain. Which do you enjoy playing more?
GD: Actually I enjoy both kind of roles , I am always grateful just to be considered for a job. It really all depends on how well the character is written , how well he is integrated into the story and what I feel that I can personally bring to the role. Villains can be more fun as they are not as limited by audience / societal expectation as are the good guys. As an actor it is fun to wear different skins so playing against type can be more challenging but more fun. What is most enjoyable is to play a bad good guy or a good bad guy.
CTB: In your new movie, Bring Him Back Dead, your character, Alex, is not so black and white. Alex is doing bad things for a good reason. Is that one of the things that appealed to you about the project?
GD: Alex is kind of a bad good guy. He does some pretty unethical things for what he feels is the right reason based on the circumstances that are forced upon him. So yes you could say that it was a factor in my accepting the role.
CTB: Louis Mandylor and Daniel Baldwin are among your co-stars in Bring Him Back Dead. What was it like playing opposite of them? And are there any actors or actresses you’d like to work with that you haven’t had the opportunity to work with yet?
GD: Louis and Daniel were both very professional and a pleasure to work with , as were Katie Keene, LeJon Woods and Ryan Shaw. There are many actors that I would like to work with but more importantly there are many directors that I would like to work with that I know could bring out the best in me and help take my career to another level.
CTB: Your work with PM Entertainment is what first made me a Gary Daniels fan. The opening chase scene in Recoil is something I will never forget. Any fond memories of working for PM Entertainment?
GD: I always enjoyed working with PM Entertainment. They were a close knit group of people and I always felt like family when working with them. They knew how to spend their money and spent time getting the action right. It was Spiro Razatos and his team that designed and directed the action in Recoil, Rage and Riot and that is why it was so good. Of course this was at the early stages of my career so it was a time of great learning for me.
CTB: Lastly, if you could resolve a great mystery about your career… IMDb says you had an uncredited role in Miami Vice as a male stripper. Was that really you shaking your money maker in Miami?
GD: Lol , that was one of my first ever paid jobs when I was fresh off the boat from the UK. I was considered a ‘special extra’ because I had a certain skill. But it was a fun day out in Miami for a very young and inexperienced English lad.
CTB: Thank you Gary for your time, it was an absolute pleasure.
GD: Thank you for your interest.
