Ryan Shoots First: Andor (S1 Ep12) “Rix Road”
Unbelievable. This show and this episode specifically should be required viewing if someone is looking to build tension. It’s masterful the way all the people and stories from the season converge in one place. The way the music of the episode is woven into the tones of the funeral procession is amazing. The whole thing is building to a breaking point. We also get some magnificent speeches one via voice over of Meriks manifesto and Marva herself from the great beyond. And boy are there some gems, the kind that would cause any oppressed individual to rise up against those that rule them.
All the great performances boil over in this episode as well Luthen, Deedra, Bix, Cassian. So many emotions are spilling out over this episode across the cast, everyone from Mon Mothma to Luthen are seeing the pieces they have been carefully placing throughout the season now starting to play the game.
This season has done such a great job of setting the stage, introducing us to new characters and really getting us invested in them. It is in such a great place for season 2 and it’s a somewhat somber note knowing we will only be getting one more season. The season gives you some payoffs but it also leaves so many things unanswered and while we all know where the road ends that does nothing to takeaway from the great work that is being put out. I never doubted the show, I was hyped for it. As soon as it was announced I got it. And even then the show was better than my expectations. It is a gem in the Disney Star Wars crown and I hope to see it continue to get the love it deserves both critically and among fans. I certainly don’t need ALL Star Wars to be this but these types of stories in this style need to have a place along side the Book of Boba Fetts “creators playing with toys” style. I’ll say this with this finale I think this officially passes Mando for my favorite of the series. I never have stayed up till 3 am for any of the Marvel or Star Wars TV series except this finale.
I hope this series can serve as the spark to ignite a new rebellion in genre filmmaking. Big names, lightsabers and lasers have a place but this type of boots on the ground drama can truly revitalize the series and set it apart.
More of this Bob now that you’re back in the captain’s seat.
