Bullet Points: Speed Dating (2022)
A movie named Speed Dating does not seem like a movie that would be reviewed here on Bulletproof Action.
Don’t let the name fool you… Speed Dating was written and directed by Jean-Paul Ly, who has a rich background in the action movie world as a stunt performer and as an action star in more recent years with movies like Jailbreak and 400 Bullets to his credit. But more importantly, Jean-Paul Ly was also the fight choreographer for the film (a role he also had in Tiger Man, a short film starring friend of the site Paul London). So again, don’t let the name fool you, Speed Dating may sound like a rom-com, but how many rom-coms require a seasoned fight choreographer?
- The Dating Game: We are along for the ride as Emma (Eloise Lovell Anderson) attends her first speed dating event being hosted at a restaurant. We get to see Emma’s point of view as she sits across the table from a variety of gentlemen and the pure torture she is experiencing by being there. A break in the speed dating action is called and Emma finds herself bellying up to the bar where she strikes up a conversation with Julian (Michael Kodi Farrow), who recognizes that this is Emma’s first time and gives her some tips on how to get through it… maybe all the guys here aren’t creeps after all. Speaking of creeps…
- It’s Boss Time: The speed dating event is rudely interrupted by a mid level crime boss (Rob Locke) and his minions. The bad guys have received information that the elusive special agent, The Silver Fox, is in attendance at tonight’s speed dating event and they are there to collect the price that is on the Silver Fox’s head. If Silver Fox steps up, none of the other people at the event will be harmed. Well that doesn’t happen and we get our first casualty! Emma seems almost pleased that this horrible evening just got interesting and she and Julian come up with a plan to eliminate the bad guys from this equation.
- Let’s Go All the Way: Now we are into full on action movie territory as The Silver Fox starts taking out the baddies with the kind of action you would expect from an 87North production and not a small indie film. First in the kitchen and then eventually in the dining room, where Silver Fox leaves no bad guy (or gal) left standing.
Speed Dating is an action comedy short that left me wanting more! I wanted more info on The Silver Fox’s background. I wanted to see more Silver Fox adventures… the Silver Fox character is equal parts appealing and intriguing since we know so little in the short time we spend with the Silver Fox. I also wanted to know if the name Silver Fox was inspired by Hwang-Jang Lee’s character in 1976’s The Secret Rivals. Plus, I wanted to know if Emma and Julian end up going out on a date? I would guess no, but crazier things have happened.
Speed Dating is available now on the Bad Guys Films YouTube channel… be sure to check it out and support the fine work indie film makers like Jean-Paul Ly are doing!
