Scene of the Week: Merhi Christmas!
Christmas and the holiday season in general is the perfect backdrop for a movie… Hallmark has built an empire on it… The horror genre has turned a Silent Night into a Deadly Night… There have been countless comedies poking fun at the traditions of the season… And for some reason when the lights are twinkling and the bells are jingling, the action just hits different.
While Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are the biggest Christmas time action blockbusters, there are plenty of other action movies that take place during the holiday season. PM Entertainment decided to get their piece of the Christmas action pie in 1996 with Riot starring Gary Daniels and Sugar Ray Leonard! (Props to Andrew Barr for the original Riot artwork)
Directed by one of PM Entertainment’s founding fathers, Joseph Merhi, Riot tells the tale of Major Shane Alcott (Gary Daniels) who is called into action to rescue the daughter of the British Ambassador. The Ambassador’s daughter kidnapping was all a master plan by a group of IRA terrorists led by Bryan O’Flaherty (Patrick Kilpatrick). Joining Alcott on this mission is his long time friend Major Williams (Sugar Ray Leonard) and did I mention this mission is taking place in Los Angeles during the midst of a riot on Christmas Eve!?!?
If my synopsis didn’t hook you into wanting Riot to become a new holiday tradition in your life, perhaps this week’s Scene of the Week, the official trailer for Riot, will sell you on the idea…
