Ryan Shoots First: The Last of Us (S1 Ep8) “When We Are in Need”
It’s penultimate episode time! And boy did The Last of Us deliver in brutal, emotional fashion.
We’ve seen the infected, we’ve seen the fascists and now we have seen the religious zealots. MVP this week was Bella Ramsey as she breaks out and takes her spunky, no-nonsense smart mouth character to the next level as maybe the most formative event in her story happens. Something that will not just shape her in this season but for years to come. In the Behind the Scenes they mention that Ellie is someone we love but also is someone we should fear. That is a perfect summary of Ellie and makes even more sense in Season 2. To look back at the first episode and how Ellie was to know and how Bella has transformed her over the season is really impressive work. She took some criticism after the casting and even after the premiere but I can’t imagine anyone now having anything to say she is crushing the role, made Ellie her own but also represented the character in an amazing way. Then there is Joel who has been on the sidelines last few weeks but oh man does he get some moments this week. What we see in him when he really thinks Ellie is gone or at least in real trouble is scary. God help anyone who gets in between them and that again pails in comparison to what is to come next week.
Of all the episodes so far, if there was one I wish I could watch not knowing what was gonna happen it would be this one. The character David was well played, he comes of as a trusting, leader of the flock but of course we are conditioned not to trust these guys. Still, he makes valid points and even though he has that dark vibe it isn’t hard to see how so many have come to follow him. When he talks to Ellie much of what he says is true but that doesn’t make it right. I really can’t believe next week is the season finale already, It’s funny because a game takes a while to play, you explore you slowly move around but in a storytelling sense yea, there really is only one more thing to do. I can’t wait to see it all play out and how Pedro and Bella will handle everything. Buckle up gang cause next week we finish our trek across America as we land in Seattle.
