Bullet Points: Angel of Fury
In this modern streaming world filled with free ad supported television (FAST for those in the know), Tubi is still the reigning champion for old school action movie lovers.
My latest Tubi viewing experience took me back to 1990’s Angel of Fury aka Triple Cross starring Cynthia Rothrock…
- Torture: Angel of Fury grabs the attention of the audience immediately with a good old fashioned torture scene. Some sad sack named Richard finds himself on the wrong end of the torture courtesy of Bolt (Peter O’Brian aka Rambu from The Intruder) and Bolt’s right hand man, the mohawk sporting Ty. Bolt wants to know about a courier coming into Indonesia with a top secret computer. Richard stays strong, even as Ty is about to insert a drill into Richard’s mouth, but finally breaks when they reveal they have Richard’s young daughter… that’s when Richard finally cracks and tells them who the courier is (Nancy Bolan) and when and where she is set to arrive.
- Fresh Off the Boat: We are then introduced to Nancy Bolan (Cynthia Rothrock, China O’Brien) as she is getting off a boat arriving in Indonesia. Nancy is talking to some friends she made on the boat (a young girl named Sarah and Sarah’s mother) and then has her ass grabbed by a stranger… a problem Nancy deals with swiftly. Nancy is greeted by a man named Tony, who identifies himself as a member of Gold Crane security. Gold Crane is the company that is set to receive the top secret computer, but Nancy’s arrival was supposed to be a secret. Before she can question things too much, Nancy and Tony find themselves fighting off thugs! Nancy kicks some ass before hopping in a speed boat with Tony in an attempt to get out of danger. However, Nancy’s pursuers don’t give up that easy and give chase via jet skis!
- Dead Man’s Party: It turns out Tony is in cahoots with a man Nancy knows well… a man Nancy believed has been dead for the past three years… that man is Nancy’s former lover Mark Garrison. Mark gives some half-assed excuse as to why he could not tell Nancy he was still alive, then mentions the common enemy he believes they both have… Bolt, the terrorist who strikes like lightning! Mark believes it is Bolt who is trying to get his hands on the super computer that Nancy has been tasked with delivering to Gold Crane and Bolt is the same man that Mark has been trying to bring down for the past three years. Nancy and Mark will have to catch up more later however, because Nancy has to meet with Mr. Randolph of Gold Crane to update him on the super computer delivery. This is where we learn that Nancy is only one of three couriers. Each courier will have a super computer with them, but only one of the three is the actual super computer that everyone is after. There are also explosive devices in each computer so if they are opened without the proper access they will blow up. The storyline aspect of Angel of Fury left a lot to be desired, but the movie more than made up for the convulsion with copious amounts of action.
- Keepin’ it Reel: Angel of Fury is basically a Cynthia Rothrock action reel. We get to see Cynthia’s Nancy Bolan kick ass in a a variety of locations, the most memorable for me being the shopping mall where the bad guys throw Nancy down an escalator. Nancy chases bad guys down by car and by motorcycle. There are shootouts and when the third courier arrives, they arrive by helicopter and I think we all know what is likely to happen when a helicopter appears in an action movie. Angel of Action may have been a more appropriate title for the movie… that is how much action is jammed into the relatively short 77 minute runtime.
- Hot Take: Remember Sarah, the young girl that Nancy met on the boat to Indonesia? Even with only 77 minutes to work with, the movie still manages to find time for Nancy to “keep her promise” to Sarah and hang out with her… first at the amusement park, then later at the shopping mall… Spoiler Alert… while at the mall, Sarah is kidnapped by the bad guys and despite Nancy’s best rescue efforts to rescue her, Sarah is shot in the back and dies! Later that night, when Nancy spends some time with Mark, he tells her that Sarah’s death was not her fault… the obvious words of a man looking to get some… Spoiler Alert… he does. I am hear to say that Sarah’s death is 100% Nancy’s fault. The moment she stepped foot in Indonesia, Nancy had bad guys trying to harm her. So why she thought it would be a good idea for an innocent girl and her mother to hang out with her when she was basically a magnet for trouble is a huge mystery?!?! Nancy was in Indonesia for business not pleasure, perhaps Nancy should have taken care of her business before riding rides at the amusement park… I bet Sarah would still be alive if she did. Nancy is eventually taken captive and finds herself being tortured much like sad sack Richard was at the start of the film. After Nancy put an innocent girl in harm’s way and basically failed at her job through out the film, I did not have much sympathy left for her and I kinda wanted Bolt to win by the end.
As an action reel, Angel of Fury is a A tier material. As a movie, Angel of Fury is E or F tier material. So if you are going to watch, pay close attention to the action scenes and during the non-action scenes may I suggest reading some of the content right here on Bulletproof Action on your phone, tablet or laptop computer.
While I am making reading suggestions, read these Bonus Bullet Points…
