Ryan Shoots First: Secret Invasion (Ep1) “Resurrection”
Hey! Remember that sub-plot in the first Captain Marvel about the Skrulls? Well, it’s got its own series that was once on a slide with a bunch of other stuff so let’s check it out!
It is crazy that a TV series led by Samuel L himself isn’t garnering more buzz but I think the super hero fatigue is real especially when Spider-Man and Flash are still doing strong at the box office. None of the trailers made this look like a can’t miss event but sometimes those are the ones that surprise us the most like Hawkeye.
Secret Invasion sees the return of Nick Fury as he seeks to shake off the rust and face some demons all to help stop a plot perpetrated by an evil faction of shape-shifting Skrulls. The premiere does a pretty good job of setting the stakes and presenting an interesting plot. One aspect I liked is usually the running gag with any Marvel show is “Where is (insert hero) here to help save the day? The funny part is when you think about it there really aren’t too many heroes left in a capacity that could help. Gone are the days of the Big Three where each could probably handle this threat on their own. The earth is left in a vulnerable place right now as heroes phase out and the new crop are finding their footing. No one is gonna swoop in to save Fury and even if they did how can he really trust them?
The whole, “Is this person a Skrull?” angle was played up in the premiere a bit but I could easily see it growing tired if they keep going back to that well over and over so it remains to be seen if they show some restraint. We see plenty of past stars return including Martin Freeman, Cobie Smulders, and Don Cheadle. We also see some new but familiar faces in Emilia Clarke and Olivia Coleman as big names making their MCU debuts. I enjoyed the premiere, I anticipate this won’t get a lot of love as it isn’t very “Marvel-y” but some will like that most about it. A fun spy thriller set in the MCU with Samuel L. Jackson as the lead? C’mon, how can you not have a little fun with that?
Observations
- I worry the whole Skrull thing gives Marvel all kinds of cheap outs of bad situations.
- I think Pepe Silvia is a Skrull
- That’s not Ross
- See I’m not crazy how I feel about spending this whole show wondering if who I’m hearing is a Skrull or not
- That’s a cool shot with the chase up the stairs.
- Apparently, this opening was all done with AI, the idea being can we trust what we see. Clever but I’m sure it will piss off some people.
- Beam me down Fury
- I do like how they cover how the blip and everything kinda left the Skrulls hanging
- Haha the Skrulls are defacto Russians
- Oh yea totally trust a kid bouncing a ball in Russia in the middle of the night
- The breaker of chains is in the MCU!
- “The Avengers” haha good one
- I prob should have seen that coming
- Maybe don’t follow the creepy shape shifter leading you somewhere?
- They plan literally went up in smoke.
- Oh dang… she’s an OG
