Scene of the Week: To Hell and Back – A Real American Hero
In 1955, Universal International Pictures released the World War 2 film To Hell and Back. It tells the story of a young American GI named Audie Murphy who would go on to be the most decorated American soldier in U.S. history. It just so happened that finding the right actor to portray such a brave and heroic man couldn’t have been easier.
Shortly after returning from fighting in Europe during World War 2, Murphy did what feels like a very odd thing and went off and became a movie star. Fast forward a decade and the folks in Hollywood came calling trying to make a movie about the moments which made Murphy a hero.
His story would become legendary and we now see shades of it in everything from Marvel movies to Rambo flicks. Murphy never asked anything of the American people but gave all that he had. It’s rare that we could see a dramatization of an event so infamous played out right in front of us and this is even more rare as it features the man himself. But just like in his military career, Audie Murphy was more than willing to take on the risk rather than to pass it off. That folks, is a REAL AMERICAN HERO!
