Scene of the Week: The Jewel of the Nile
I always get Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile mixed up. I don’t know why, because they are pretty different movies. Of course, Jack Colton (Michael Douglas), Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) and Ralph (Danny DeVito) all return, but Romancing the Stone takes place is South America and The Jewel of the Nile is in Africa. A lot of the fun was removed from the original and replaced with a little more casual racism. Those are negatives for The Jewel of the Nile, except it does have two major points on its side. First the hit song “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going” by Mr. Billy Ocean and the second is an outstanding slow speed jet plane escape.
This week’s Scene of the Week takes a look at Jack and Joan escaping from Omar Kahlifa with the titular jewel in tow. If you would have told me that one of the most fun F-16 scenes on film takes place entirely on the ground I would have said you are out of your ever loving mind, but after seeing The Jewel of the Nile you would be correct.
