Bullet Points: Warrior (S3 Ep7) “Gotta Be Crooked to Get Along in a Crooked World”
After last week’s humdinger of an episode, I was counting down the days until the next episode of Warrior Season 3! I have to say, as much as I get the appeal of binging a show and have found myself doing it, I think I enjoy the week to week anticipation even more.
If you were anticipating my recap of Episode 7, anticipate no more…
- Back in Chinatown: Ah Sahm and Young Jun are rushing the badly wounded Father Jun into Hop Wei headquarters in the episode’s cold open. A doctor removes the bullet in Father Jun’s abdomen, but as the episode progresses we find out that Father Jun is far from well mentally… which only adds to Young Jun’s stress and his ill feelings towards his “best friend” Ah Sahm… Meanwhile a frustrated Ah Sahm confides in Yan Mi that he feels guilty for what happened to Father Jun, after all he was the one who insisted on fighting the Germans after their mistreatment of a young Chinese boy, another example of Ah Sahm thinking he is doing the right thing and it ending badly. Yan Mi does some confiding of her own when she shows him the extra counterfeit money she has been printing so she can start a new life once her father passes and turns the printing business over to her brother… Ah Sahm makes her promise to not take anymore money and warns her if Young Jun ever finds out he won’t be able to do anything to stop him.
- Unhappy Ending: We know the Hop Wei made it back to Chinatown and Happy Jack is about to find out that Lee and Chao did too after selling them out… literally. Jack goes into Abigail’s bar and gloats about how he knew her relationship with Lee would not end well and that’s about the time Richard Lee makes his presence known. Happy Jack looks like he has seen a ghost. Then Chao comes into the picture. Jack tells them both they should have stayed where he sent them. And that’s when Abigail pulls out her shotgun and shoots Happy Jack dead! Lee and Chao then each put a bullet in him too, just to make sure the job is done…. Later at the bar, Secret Service Agent Mosley (who survived the Happy Jack attack at the end of Episode 5) shows up and Lee turns in his badge… however Mosley reminds Lee that he is the only one who can make the murder charge against Lee go away, even if Lee’s family is no longer hunting him. So Deputy Lee is back on the case of the stolen treasury plates… whether he wants to be or not.
- Leary Leary Everywhere: Episode 7 is heavy on Dylan Leary content… After the two brothers that Leary tangled with back in Episode 2 are caught and arrested for stealing food to feed their families from a Chinatown grocer after hours, Leary pays Chief Atwood a visit to see if he can cut them some slack. Atwood informs Leary that he is all about law and order and not cutting slack… The situation worsens when a trio of Chinatown youths attack an Irishman as a measure of revenge for the grocery store robbery… something that doesn’t sit well with the patrons of Leary’s pub, who are all hopped up on whiskey and looking to start another riot in Chinatown. Leary shuts that shit down and tells them he will handle it… that leads to a meeting between Leery and Ah Sahm outside of Hop Wei headquarters… instead of getting a rematch from last season, the two have a respectful conversation basically agreeing that they will each keep their respective people in line since another riot is the last thing that anybody wants…. But wait, there’s more! Leary and his “mentor” Douglas Strickland pay acting Mayor Buckley a visit with the news that his opponent in the upcoming election, Mr. Thayer, is having second doubts about running… as Mr. Strickland puts it, Thayer doesn’t have the stomach for politics. Strickland then informs Buckley that he and Mr. Leary can make sure that Thayer withdraws from the election as long as Buckley looks out for the interests of Strickland and Leary… by the end of the episode Thayer pays Buckley a visit and informs him he is no longer running for mayor, he then tries to insult Buckley, but Buckley snaps back and it may have been the first time in the entire series I felt like I was on Buckley’s side. Buckley is then so excited about his victory, he goes home and bangs his lady friend, Catherine Archer.
All of the main storylines this season are nearing their boiling point and with only three episodes remaining, you have to believe we will start getting the payoff to them in the next three weeks while keeping the door open for a potential Season 4.
A fourth season not guaranteed by any means, especially with the ongoing Hollywood labor disputes. So while “Will there be a Warrior Season 4?” is the biggest question we can probably ask ourselves, I have a few smaller questions to ask in the Bonus Bullet Points…
- How Long Until Big Bill Looks For Another Job?: Bill O’Hara reports to his first day working for his brother-in-law Horace, but it’s not exactly what he expected. Instead of having an office job, Bill found himself starting at the bottom, doing the grunt work with guys half his age. A rough first day to say the least and it makes me wonder how long Bill will be working for Horace and will it be Bill’s choice or Horace’s?
- How Long Until Yan Mi Skips Town?: Young Jun paying Yan Mi a visit and saying they need to ramp production, then instructing her to teach some of his soldiers the art of printing counterfeit money, so they can operate 24/7 AND “in case anything happens to her” had to be a big red flag for her… and with her stash of money, I can easily see her leaving town and trying to take Ah Sahm with her. Or will she never even have that chance?
- Will they save the Mai Ling/Li Yong Wedding for the Season Finale?: Mai Ling spent much of the episode inviting people to her wedding. First, Ah Sahm and Yan Mi when she catches them engaging in some hanky panky by the printing press. Then later after Mai Ling mediates a dispute between Ah Toy and a fellow brothel owner, Mai Ling asks Ah Toy to attend her wedding as well. Will this huge event be saved for the season finale? And will Zing crash the wedding?
