Ryan Shoots First: Ahsoka (Ep6) “Far, Far Away”
Oh if you were like myself wondering “How on earth could they ever hope to follow up that episode last week?” Well how about some mega reveals?
The episode started slow and at first, I was perfectly fine with it. After the constant high of last week let us come back down was fine with me but I’ll be damned even in a lower tempo plot moving episode they packed so much into it as we arrive in a new galaxy. This episode also spent a decent amount of time on Ray Stevenson Baylen’s character. Diving into his motivations and his past. It’s clear he isn’t just “Jedi bad” evil but is driven by so much more than the binary dark, light dichotomy. And it’s so fascinating, Baylen is such an interesting character and Ray brings so much to the performance. The subtlety of his eyes and his inflections imply there is so much going on that he isn’t revealing yet. Shin continues to as well play the wide-eyed apprentice who just asks questions. She also doesn’t seem to just be evil or even always agree with her Master, she questions him and probes for the why. I love their relationship and how different it is, they resemble a typical Jedi Padawan relationship but with a sense of edge. More of them are certainly welcome and choosing to do it in this episode was wise.
But don’t let that fool you, this is still a Rebels sequel series and in that regard, we take some big strides. I’ll save the details (unless you read the observations but that’s on you) but this episode pushes the greater story by a giant leap. I will say this episode gave off some Dune vibes, both in the scenery, the music, and even some Bene Gesserit vibes. It did feel like a different world but still not entirely unlike Star Wars. I’m sure eventually the story is gonna come back to the main universe but for now it’s great seeing that the edges of the map have widened and also the stories that can be told.
