Ryan Shoots First: Loki (S2 Ep1) “Ouroboros”
The god of mischief is back in Season 2 of Loki! I forgot how much I enjoyed Season 1. It’s weird as it feels so removed from the rest of the MCU but plays a pretty big part in setting up the next big bad in Kang. And Season 2 looks to dive into all of that even further.
Season 2 picks up pretty much immediately following the finale of Season 1 with the TVA in shambles as Sylvie has slain He Who Remains. Unleashing Kangs all across the multiverse. But first Loki has to deal with a small situation of slipping around the timeline. I mentioned how I forgot how much I liked the show and one element in particular that was so strong in season 1 was the dynamic between Loki and Mobius played by Owen Wilson. The two pick it right up in this premiere with their seamless banter and playing off one another. Whenever they are together on screen I am locked in and I’m usually rewarded for it.
Beyond that, the overall tone and aesthetic of the show are back and were such a strong point of season 1. The 70’s office industrial vibe but with a sci-fi flair is so cool. The warm browns and yellows mixed with the CRT monitors and in this episode, nuclear reactor vibes are such a unique setting. The show feels very confident in its style and it’s executing well here in the premiere. One of the big new additions to the cast this season is Ouroboros or OB. He’s played by Ke Huy Quan who is in the midst of a renaissance after his Oscar-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Ke Huy Quan’s delivery and enthusiasm are pitch-perfect for that tone of the show and he seamlessly fits right into the cast, a welcomed new addition to our TVA gang.
I know Loki will likely play into the larger storyline as all MCU stuff does but I enjoy the show for what it is and its overall focus on who Loki is and all his variants makes for a nice standalone show. Sure all that other stuff is cool but I’m invested in just the story this show is telling which is nice for once in an MCU property.
