Ryan Shoots First: Invincible (S2 Ep3) “This Missive, This Machination!”
This week’s third episode of Invincible Season 2 was an oddball episode. It was a bit all over the place and a little disjointed as it felt like a few different issues of the comic all kinda crammed into one.
It starts off with Mark starting college then seems to go into a spin-off with the return of Allen the Alien voiced by Seth Rogan. Then we harsh cut to a story of Mark’s mom still trying to cope with everything, then a third angle right at the end. Oh yea, and some side stories with the defenders team as well. Like I said all over the place. But man the ending was a pretty big shocker and I assume now we will kick into the next phase of the story. With so few episodes in a season and the long time frame between each one to allow animators to do their thing it seems like an odd choice to have THIS much filler in an episode but I suppose there needs to be some calm moments for the big moments to hit. And when I say the end is a pretty big beat to end on it really is. The thing is when the episode shifted to the Allen side show I was into it, its a cool character, with an interesting back story and it gave some good exposition on how the rest of the universe views the Viltrumite empire and the threat they possess. I also liked the idea of a Mole on the galactic council and all that but it wrapped up really fast to get back to earth and the other side stories going on.
I usually hate the word filler in shows and I defend all the Star Wars animated shows from it, read most of my Bad Batch reviews, but this felt like more than that in just the very broken up, abrupt way the episode bounced around. Like they didn’t feel confident to fully commit to any of these angles to carry an episode and just decided to jam them all into one no matter how weird and abrupt the changes felt. Heck, they even flash credits halfway through the episode like its over then we go into another 20 minutes of the episode. Still, it left with quite a moment and I eagerly await seeing the pay-off of some of thing things this episode presented. I would just say while I’m sure it is essential to the greater story, this isn’t an episode I imagine will get a lot of rewatches.
