Ryan Shoots First: The Acolyte (S1 Ep3) “Destiny”
Last week we saw the big premiere of the new Disney + Star Wars show, The Acolyte, and you will never believe it but the reactions were mixed! Well, most liked it but a very vocal group very much did not. So much of the week was spent debating about fire in space even though George himself once said “There is oxygen in space when I want it to”. So it was nice to get to sit down and watch a new episode tonight but even before it premiered there were rumblings from those who got previews that this episode would be the line in the sand, the most egregious thing in all of Disney Star Wars and would be the point of no return. And I can not for the life of me tell you after seeing it what moment that was…
In the series premiere, we established the twins of Osha and Mae, sisters torn apart in some inciting event that involved four Jedi. Two of them are killed in the very first two episodes from Mae herself. So in this episode, “Destiny”, we get to see just what happened to kick off this whole mystery. Beyond that, we see some heavy theming of choice and destiny, the threads of The Force and how we are bound. Standard Star Wars stuff so again not sure what the big deal is about in this episode. Again one of the stars of the series is Sol, I found out over the week that his actor Lee Jung-jae learned English just for this role and that is very impressive. Yes his English is broken but not in a way that drags down the scene and his ability to express emotion in his delivery in a language he just learned is commendable. I also have to give props to Mother Anisea played by Jodie Turner-Smith, she commands the screen when she is on and walked the line of a leader but also a mother well. I have some questions about how the end played out but I have suspicions there was more going on than what we saw in this episode. We shall see as the mystery continues to unfold.
