Ryan Shoots First: The Acolyte (S1 Ep6) “Teach/Corrupt”
This show might as well be called Star Wars: A Blue Balls Story cause every week they drip-feed us the answers to the mystery! Last week’s episode was the high of the season so far. It’s one of the best lightsaber battles we have seen in a long time, with some deep lore pulls and some big deaths that very few Star Wars properties have had the guts to do. Killing off Jecki and Yord who fans had grown to really like took some guts, and for them both to be in particularly gruesome ways felt jarring, unsettling and really built up the Stranger as a credible threat. If last week was the flash this week is the cool down. After the twins pulled the switch-a-roo they now are left with their opposite masters to find out a little more about what exactly is going on, the mystery of their childhood and of themselves.
This episode continues to keep a lot of the greater mystery sealed but we can start putting some pieces together and see maybe where this is all heading. Osha and Mae both are seeing things from the other’s shoes and it gives them a unique perspective on what their sister has been going through for the last 16 years. The two masters of the Stranger and Sol stole the episode though as they both deal with the outcome of the battle. The Stranger in a calm almost seductive way and Sol in sheer grief not only for his fallen comrades but for whatever secret he is keeping about that faithful night all those years ago. I mentioned this last week but my one big criticism about the show is as always the run time. There were so many impactful scenes with some good performances but nothing is given time to breathe and just really land before we are cross wiping to the next scene. Andor showed if you just treat these shows less like animated 30-minute episodes and more like Cable dramas they can really hit hard. Just give scenes a little more time to bring us as an audience in, we want that or else the quick cuts wouldn’t feel so jarring. Anyway, the season is getting down to the end and it looks like Sol is gonna spill the beans next week Osha has herself in her own predicament so again I will be eagerly awaiting whatever morsels of the mystery we get next week.
