Ryan Shoots First: The Acolyte (S1 Ep8) “The Acolyte”
Wow! What a season finale for The Acolyte. They really went all out, after a penultimate episode that was all flashback this thing was all gas no brakes.
Seriously if you are reading this and have not watched the episode yet stay off Twitter. We receive some much-needed answers to multiple mysteries but we also introduce some whole new ones in ways that all but guarantee a season 2. Seriously like it must have already been greenlight cause there is no way they left these cliffhangers to not have a second season all locked up. I will try to avoid the large spoilers but lets say there are some massive reveals on both the light and dark side. We also see some techniques and themes only ever theorized or written about, seeing some of these things happen in live-action was so cool and always is a big win for the fans who eat up all this extended lore stuff. The lightsaber battle in this episode was once again top-notch as well with some truly unique choreography and fighting styles we have never seen before it was a joy to watch.
I very much enjoyed this finale, the show has been well-acted all season and getting to see the characters finally get some resolution or take the big step was satisfying. Saying that though I couldn’t help but think just how great this show would have been with just slightly longer run times. I have mentioned this in past reviews but the show has very fast pacing reminiscent of the Star Wars animated shows. 30 minutes, fast cuts, resolutions and character moments happening quickly then we’re off. It works for animation but I would have loved to just have a bit more time. And when I say time I mean everything the show did just longer. No extra scenes, just wait a pause, let moments sink in, let characters soak in the moment and actors get a chance to register what’s happening. I love this quirky, oddly paced show but man with 42-minute episodes the great moments in this finale would have really been on the top tier of Star Wars content. There is a lot of tragedy in the culmination of this episode and some stories and I could feel it, I can only imagine how much more impactful it could have been.
With that, though season 1 is over and I am so excited it looks like we are in for multiple seasons. With all the other shows dealing with legacy characters or big actors we’re never sure if season 2’s are coming but this feels like the foundation for something like a Rebels or a Clone Wars that they can build on for multiple years to come. I am ready to go!
