Ryan Shoots First: Agatha All Along (S1 Ep4) “If I Can’t Reach You / Let My Song Teach You”
Who’s up for a power ballad? The coven completed their first trial last week, this week they face a generational curse that just wants to jam out. As I mentioned last week I enjoy the “monster of the week” type feel of the show where each week presents a new chief challenge as well as some character moments and threads we have been building throughout the season.
This week we see the biggest jump from a character noticeably absent last week and that is Aubrey Plaza’s character Rio. I don’t think I am spoiling anything when I say she and Agatha had a romantic relationship as they haven’t exactly hidden it well. This week as she is inserted back into the plot we get a little more insight into their relationship and more of Plaza and Hahn sharing scenes together which might be the strongest parts of the show.
The other mystery is just who Teen is and who put the spell on him. Again the show is telegraphing pretty hard who he is but this week we find out it may not be that simple. Or maybe it is… I suppose we will find out in a few weeks as we hit the midway point in this 9 episode season.
This week it was revealed that Agatha has the lowest budget of any Marvel Television production yet and I can see why. And I am not saying that in a negative way, the episodic nature of the show means most of the episodes take place in a tight set like a single room and then the road sets. It has visual effects but it is not nearly as effect-heavy as other Marvel productions. The strength of the show relies in its mysteries and its performances of course anchored by its big names Plaza and Hahn. I like this approach and if more shows can present fun different ideas with in a safe budget that means we get more diverse projects in the MCU without everything needing to be “Avengers Level” threats in both scope and budget. Find talented people, and let them cook. Or should I say brew?
