Ryan Shoots First: Agatha All Along (Season Finale)
After a stand-out episode last week we head into the two part finale of Agatha All Along and man did that title end up meaning a hell of a lot.
Last week, Patti LuPone delivered a stand-out performance that had many saying it was one of the better things the MCU has put out in a while and I have to say after this week Kathryn Hahn decided to throw her hat in the ring. If you thought Aubrey Plaza was limited in the series she popped in as well to show that she still had a lot in the tank ad literal Death.
I mentioned in previous weeks how this show gave a lot of Doctor Who vibes both with its performances and pacing and this finale felt like a grand big Who finale. We saw nods and eggs scattered all throughout the season come to ahead and pay off big time. Now that the season is over we can really go back and see the master class of writing the story was. Within certain episodes, we saw payoffs and hints and then in the finale, we saw layers within those layers. Everything meant something… hell it usually meant two things…and it all got paid off in a satisfying way in the end.
I find it funny that not just in the MCU but in television and movies in general the “thing nobody asked for” usually end up being some of the biggest surprises and hits because they have a level of freedom we don’t get with other things. No one knew what to expect of this show. It had some names but we knew it had a small budget and very little about the plot was revealed. They took every bit of that mystery and freedom to craft a fun, engaging and rewarding experience that I enjoyed even more than I thought I would. After the premiere I thought “oh this will be a fun spooky show to take me through the fall but it ended up being a lot more than just a fun seasonal piece of entertainment. I hope Marvel learns the right lessons from this and that something doesn’t have to be “highly anticipated” to be worth doing and as long as talented people have a vision and are given room to work some reality great things can come out the other side. Marvel unveiled a sizzle reel of what they have coming from the TV side in 2025 and nothing looked as interesting as Agatha just was but I’m willing to be surprised again. Let your people cook Kev.
