Ryan Shoots First: Skeleton Crew (S1 Ep4) “Can’t Say I Remember No At Attin”
The adventure continues this week on Skeleton Crew as the gang sets foot on a both familiar but unfamiliar world. Neel is one of the stars of the show this week as he is the viewpoint we see much of the action unfold. As the mystery of the planets separated by the Republic continues this week we see Jod make some choices that seem to enamor himself more with the kids but is it out of virtue or for other purposes.
The kids continue to be the focus of the show and even Jod is really just a foil to act and bounce of them. It’s a bold choice to sideline Jude Law to let the kids drive the plot that is what they are doing. The kids also continue to prove themself to be competent and consistent which I appreciate. This week there is a revelation that plenty of other shows would milk the entire episode just to finally have the main characters realize what we all knew 30 seconds in. Not here, before we even take a breathe on this new planet the kids have already connected the dots. I love how the show continues to present them as naive and bold but not stupid.
This episode did feel a little abrupt though almost as if there was an episode missing, like how old sitcoms would sometimes air episodes in different orders than what they were shot and while it still works there are little interactions that seem off. This felt like that, perhaps there were some changes or scenes edited but it felt like I missed a scene or two somewhere to help tie some things together. That or it felt like we did a small time jump and some relationships were progressed off screen For instance we just saw them make their tenuous deal with Jod at the end of last week, a deal for mutual survival and this week they all seem to be pretty relaxed and comfortable around one another. I expected a little more skepticism after you just caught him in a lie but oh well not a huge deal just felt strange as the episode started, a victim of these short run times, I still don’t know why they aim for 30 minutes in so many of these episodes.
Nevertheless, Skeleton Crew continues to be a treat and each character got pushed forward a little more this week, we saw Whim come into his own, Fern show some kinks in her armor, KB continues to show flashes that there may be more to her and Neel Nation is thriving. On to adventure!
