Ryan Shoots First: Skeleton Crew (S1 Ep5) “You Have A Lot To Learn About Pirates”
No better way to spend Christmas than in a galaxy far far away as the story of four kids’ adventures across the stars continues…
This week sees the most piratey, Goonies-like episode yet complete with secret treasure, underground caves, and booby traps. Last week’s episode felt a bit more like a side quest so far from what we have seen but even then it managed to move the story and the characters along in a meaningful way but this week sees some pretty big changes to the status quo. It does feature a fun twist on a few pirate tropes, chief of which the most fearsome land of death and decay now being a spa as its been quite a while since SM-33 was last here. It is unclear how long that ship was buried in the kids back yards but it does seem to be a good long while. Long enough for its original crew to become legends.
Another element I keep revisiting is how the show is silly and goofy but never at the expense of making the cast look idiotic. This week continues that as they pull off a silly gag to try and get past security and for once the adults aren’t really fooled by it for a second but Jod works his magic and the kids are none the wiser. It is a clever trope on kid brain and often we may have felt like we were TOTALLY pulling something off when in reality everyone knew. Like when I became a parent and the first time I walked in and my son faked like he was asleep, and I just turned and walked out. Suddenly it hit me that all those times I did that my dad totally knew. That is how this felt in the show. Beyond that Whim and Jod got a decent amount of character work moving their stories into the next phase while KB and Fern got small moments that didn’t really move them along but reinforced what we have already seen which sometimes is just as nice. Not everyone can develop at the same time so taking a small bit to at least keep the engine running on their stories is a sign the writers care and are more than aware of where they are on the journey.
The show continues to be a treat and every week leaves a nice little tease to keep bringing you back to the next phase. I don’t believe the status quo change at the end of this episode will stick but I am intrigued to see how it will play out.
