Ryan Shoots First: Ahsoka (Ep3) “Time to Fly”
Man, Ahsoka just gets it. Dave Filoni has been a part of all the live-action Star Wars stuff but never really left to run it himself. This is the first time he’s really been away from Favreau and is somewhat left to his own to do what he wants. This feels so much like Star Wars. This episode has all the hallmarks of Star Wars, Jedi training, moving objects, droid analyzing, and a dog fight. But all of it is just done so so well. The Master and Padawan relationship between Ahsoka and Sabine is so great especially when you add all the pre-established history between them. Then on top of that you add Ahsoka herself leaving the order and Sabine really not being very force adept. Its all familiar but fresh. Yes Ahsoka left the order but as Huyang mentions to her she does come from a long line of unorthodox Jedi. It may just be what the order needs to look at someone’s heart more than their midi count.
On the other side is Here trying to convince the New Republic that Thrawn is a threat worth investing time and resources into. They OF COURSE think she is crazy and only wants to find Ezra. If you are not aware a similar event happens when Leia begins trying to warn the NR about the First Order. They call her a war monger, they expose her Vader parentage and she loses all public support which is what forces her to form the Resistance. So its nice they are establishing how something like that can grow under this New Republic so obsessed with not trying to look like the Empire and look like they are seeking War they will let the next threat thrive on their watch.
I was so bummed when the episode ended, this show is the most OT feel of anything we have had from Disney Star Wars. Sure it feels like Clone Wars and Rebels but those shows captured the soul of the OG’s and this has that same vibe. If all this is building to some big Filloni-verse movie I am perfectly fine with that.
Observations
- He’s in Grievous mode
- Obvious parallels to Luke with the blast shield but also super Kung fu training vibes
- That’s Chancellor Mothma to you!
- No wonder the First Order rises under fools like this guy
- Hera was savage there
- There you go Jacen’s hair is green, crisis averted.
- They really are eliminating any “Mary Sue” complaints with Sabine
- We’ve all peeked when trying to force move something
- I instantly thought of Tail Spin when I saw and heard those fighters.
- Huyang being a mentor and comedic droid is great
- Ahsoka in space fighting fighters with a lightsaber is the most Clone Wars thing to ever happen in live action.
