Ryan Shoots First: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (S1 Ep5) “The Way Out”
With this week we have reached the halfway point in this season of Monarch. While I applaud them for having 10 episodes in an age where most shows with this level of production have 6-8, we are now halfway through and I have no idea what the big picture is.
I’m not saying I need everything laid out but whatever the big thing is for this show we still have no idea what it is. We got maybe a hint last week with the readings similar to those before G Day. But this week no mention of that thread. I’m betting whatever the main character’s dad was working on also has something to do with it but that is taking a very long time to develop. Maybe I have gotten too used to these short run series that by now are pretty deep into the story but I need something as ain’t much going on.
I did like this week’s exploration of Cate’s backstory leading up to G Day. The heavy PTSD and survivor guilt she feels all come to a head as she retraces many of her steps of that day for the first time. She also finally confronts her mother and the truth of her father’s secrets, it was nice to see some closure and now they can hopefully focus on finding pops. I noted in my observations I read a tweet that if G Day caused this much turmoil they are in for a whopper when Gidorah shows up and nearly destroys the world.
As we move into the second half I hope things pick up a bit. I’m invested and I like what they’re doing but things have really ground to a halt in the least two weeks and while the early episodes were paced so well and moved so fast we are rolling in neutral right now getting little scrapes of the big picture. Maybe we need a Kaiju to shake things up.

- That’s an awesome shot with the projector over old shares face
- Back to San Fran
- Little 20 goes a long way
- I don’t doubt at all people would think it was safe.
- Mom is ride or die.
- I saw a tweet saying it’s sad all these survivors are so depressed and shook about G Day and in a few years Space Satan will cause an almost extinction-level event.
- Grounds Hero is an apt name
- Dang, she’s smooth
- Pretty brilliant kid
- Man, that city really is trashed.
