Ryan Shoots First: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (S1 Ep10) “Beyond Logic”
After an absolute banger of a penultimate episode, the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters finale steals a page from the Fast and Furious franchise and focuses on family.
The Randa family has been at the center of the entire season, mirroring the coming threat of the titans with the discovery and reconciliation of this estranged family across decades, past, present and now future. Yes, last week we sped run through some big reveals like Papa Randa revealing himself to Kentaro and the massive reveal that Kay is alive and well and has only spent around 57 days trapped in the rift world. So this finale was a little different than what many probably expected. I have mentioned multiple times throughout my reviews this season that they were not really pushing along whatever the larger threat was. A few times they mention tensions rising around the world at different outposts and stuff like that but not much else. Well, there was a good reason for that as the finale really isn’t too concerned with whatever is going on there. It is much more into the personal story of the Randa family across the three generations and Shaw himself. Their journey to try and get home takes a majority of the finale and I was down for it. Seeing Kay interact with Old Shaw and her granddaughter was a powerful scene. Wemdo get some Kaiju action but we never really learn about what the threat going on is and for a moment I thought it was the events of King of the Monsters but that doesn’t really make sense timeline wise but maybe it is just really early on in the evil plan part. Plus Monarch’s resources are completely upgraded in that movie from what we have seen them have in Monarch the show.
And therein lies my questions as the show’s first season closes. Where the heck is all this happening? Yes, we have established G Day but the world just seems so different than what we have seen in King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. The funding and tech has to make some massive leaps to get on that level and while the end of the episode gives us a few more hints at the timeline there is still a lot to dive in and unpack to try and decipher where this show fits in with all the other movies.
In conclusion, I really liked the show and I think Apple has a hit on their hands as the boots on the ground approach to the people behind the monsters seemed to present some cool set pieces, some interesting characters and enough morsels of story set in a world where titans exist to keep you coming back. I don’t know if they plan on doing more seasons but the finale seems to imply we will be seeing these characters again and I am excited to see if they tie into Godzilla x Kong this Spring. All Hail the King!
Observations
- I get you just went through a lot but maybe take a breath and tell her what’s going on.
- This opening was fire no doubt.
- I mean none of this really explains faking your own death. You already were never around and was away with your work.
- Man, what a hell of a gaslighting “would you rather I never met your mother” is.
- How is this any better way to break it to her
- I just can’t help but keep thinking how all of this goes to hell in King of the Monsters
- So I have questions about what this means when they go visit Kong in the hollow earth is that different than this network? Does time slow there as well?
- That’s a pretty good way to sum it up, maybe mention the internet but pretty much nailed it.
- What?!? Why would you stay behind
- “”Uhh hey grandma, you seem kinda cool I would like to get to know you if ya don’t mind”
- Man, that is one ugly titan
- Yes!
- There’s our chonky boi!
- Man, Lee kinda feels like you could have tried a little harder
- That was a weird cut.
- So how long has it been?
- Yea, this isn’t 2015
- Man that “mama” broke me
- Ok, so still Pre Kong but I guess post KotM?
- Answers my question about time in the Hollow Earth, or was that Skull Island?
