Bullet Points: Silk 2
There were two things that were conspicuous by their absence in 1989’s Silk 2.
1. Cec Verrell, the star of 1986’s Silk, did not return to reprise the role of Jenny “Silk” Sleighton.
2. The awesome “Silk” theme song performed by Marissa Buñag was inexplicably not used for the sequel.
- Trouble in Paradise: The movie starts off with a terrorist takeover of the Israeli Embassy in Hawaii. The terrorists are threatening to kill a hostage every 15 minutes until their demands are met. The local cops and the FBI are outside of the Embassy, strategizing their next move… but Silk (Monique Gabrielle, Deathstalker II) the smoothest, toughest AND sexiest cop in Hawaii isn’t about to stand around and do nothing. Silk is going in despite what her superior, Captain Sharp (Ken Metcalfe, TNT Jackson) and the FBI have to say about it… Silk’s partner, Sgt. Chris Meadows (Bon Vibar, Raiders of the Sun) isn’t about to let his partner go it alone and together the two take out the terrorists and save the hostages. Captain Sharp may not like it, but there’s no doubt Silk and Meadows get results! However, it looks like it is going to be the last hurrah for Silk and Meadows…
- Happy Retirement: It turns out that Sgt. Meadows is retiring from the police force after many years of outstanding service… so it only goes to reason that Captain Sharp has an issue with his cops having some cake and celebrating. In a backwards move, Meadows presents Silk with a gift… it’s a bracelet to thank her for not getting him killed in the line of duty. Speaking of people who didn’t let Meadows get killed, Meadows receives a call from an old friend, Kashi Hashimura (Joe Mari Avellana, Wheels of Fire), who saved Meadows’ ass years ago when he was on a case that involved the Yakuza. Kashi tells Meadows that he needs help recovering the Four Sacred Scrolls of Immortality. Kashi believes they are now in Honolulu and that he is on his way… retirement be damned, there’s no way Meadows isn’t going to help Kashi. And if Meadows is in, you know Silk won’t be far behind.
- The Master Plan: It turns out the Scrolls are part of a scheme to commit some major insurance fraud by the evil Hancock Gish (Jan Merlin, The Gladiator). Gish owns a museum that specializes in Asian art and he is displaying the Four Sacred Scrolls of Immortality at an upcoming exhibit… except the Scrolls on display aren’t the real scrolls. Gish’s thugs have the authentic Scrolls and are set to put them in a safe place until Gish can unload them on the black market. Meanwhile, the Scrolls in the museum will be destroyed in a fire allowing Gish to collect the insurance on them. But Hancock Gish wasn’t counting on Silk…
- One Out of Four Ain’t Bad: Meadows and Silk catch up with Gish’s goons as they are attempting to transport the real Scrolls by boat to Gish’s private warehouse. There’s a big a shoot out with the goons and the cops… and when the goons start getting away in the boat, Meadows and Silk both manage to jump on board. Meadows ends up captured but Silk gets away with one of the scrolls… Since Gish needs all four, his mustachioed goon shows up at Silk’s house later that evening. And he shows up while Silk is in the shower… there are multiple views and angles of Silk in the shower before she gets out and puts on a silk robe and kicks some ass… After the altercation, the cops, including Captain Sharp show up at Silk’s place. Sharp is pissed at Silk for the guy breaking into her place and puts her on two weeks mandatory leave… he also assigns Detective Colby (Henry Strzalkowski, Live by the Fist) to keep an eye on her… which backfires big time. Silk ends up getting a call from the bad guys proposing a trade, the scroll she took for Meadows, BUT she is to come alone. Colby ends up following her to to the meeting spot and next thing you know, Sgt. Chris Meadows is retiring from life. At that point, Silk embraces the fact her boss put her on leave and she books a flight to Honolulu to finish what Meadows started!
I am not naive enough to believe that Monique Gabrielle was getting acting gigs based on her acting abilities, but her work in Silk 2 made her look like Meryl Streep in Deathstalker II… Monique’s delivery was rough at times, to say the least, and made Silk 2 feel like a step down from the original.
Fortunately, Monique’s Silk never had to carry the whole load herself… with the exception of the shower scene, that was ALL her! Once the action gets to Honolulu, Silk has help from Kashi, Kashi’s apprentice Tony (who becomes Silk’s love interest), Holly, a random college student that Silk met on the flight to Honolulu and an enthusiastic cab driver… they all do their part to help Silk take down Gish and his money making scheme in explosive fashion.
Now let these Bonus Bullet Points do their part…
- Directed By: One thing that remained the same from Silk to Silk 2 was the director… that being the one and only Cirio H. Santiago.
- If You Ever: …wanted to see Monique Gabrielle’s stunt double deliver a dropkick through a windshield, then Silk 2 is the movie for you.
- Favorite Quote: “If bullshit was art, you’d be priceless.” – Tony to Gish
- If You Ever: …wanted to see Monique Gabrielle in a blurry sex scene, then the copy of Silk 2 on YouTube is the movie for you.
