Ryan Shoots First: Agatha All Along (S1 Ep3) “Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials”
The Witches get all toil and trouble this week in Episode 3 of Agatha All Along as they begin their journey down the witches’ road. I enjoy team up stories and I really enjoy forced team up movies. Last week we learned Agatha never really intended to take this coven on the road but just get them to use their powers on her so she could get a jump start. Of course, her situation and the road itself had other plans.
This week they face their first challenge on the road and we see some HEAVY hints at just who teen is and that mystery. I would argue too heavy and it seems fairly obvious who he is now but I won’t mention it here. Beyond that, we got to see something this week that really isn’t explored a lot in other witches in media. Actually making potions! Outside Hocus Pocus, witches making some brew isn’t something you see much anymore. Much of the focus goes on hexes and spells but to see the solution to the problem be “eyes of a newt” was fun.
Kathryn Hahn continues to be the best part of the show. She gives off some Missy from Doctor Who vibes in the way she is so likable in how witchy and bad she is. She uses everyone and wants zero responsibility and still we are laughing along with her and rooting for her to have redemption. I am not saying it is on Loki levels, that is almost impossible, but we can see where her path to redemption is an seeing if she will have the courage to walk through that door will be interesting to watch throughout the season. The rest of the cast all seem to have some good chemistry. Sasheer Zamata and Debra Jo Rupp shined in this episode as they took on the support load but Teen played by Joe Locke plays the over-prepared by under-experienced youth well, and this is all without Aubrey Plaza in this weeks episode.
This format of a new test every week makes for a good episodic show and I look forward to seeing the stakes continue to rise and the coven either splinter or come together to survive.
