Ryan Shoots First: MMPR: The Last Ranger Parody VII
Ya’ll have to see this shit. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you combined The Room with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? Well, Tubi has something for you!
My Twitter feed today was blown up with this knock-off Power Rangers movie called MMPR: The Last Ranger Parody VII. I am unsure if there is a Parody I – VI. Regardless after seeing one clip I knew I had to check it out and it did not disappoint in the hilarity. I don’t like picking too much at movies because creating anything and getting it on a platform is a feat. People put time and energy into this and that warrants commendation. But it takes 20 seconds to grasp what kind of trip this movie is going to be. For reference the movie was made in 2017 but as far as I can tell is new to Tubi… or maybe the internet just discovered it.
We start on the burning rubble of Anger Grove complete with every pre-made Blender asset available as putty’s attack a woman fighter named Emily. Jason Scott himself shows up to save the day and this really sets the tone. Jason is straight wearing a Star Lord costume jacket and they didn’t even bother removing the Ravager logo from the shoulder. Emily’s blaster is very clearly a Nerf blaster painted black. It’s all so great. The action is slowed down in post but the actors are also clearly working the stunts slow as well.
The dialogue in every scene plays out like a video game, the characters walk around slowly starting conversations with everyone in the room as they exchange dialogue. My son nailed it as he walked up behind me and said “Why does it sound like he is talking to an NPC?” He really nailed it a scene later at the command center Emily asks Zordon and Jason question after question and I can practically see the BioWare dialogue options that she’s one by one going through. They also all turn to the screen as if we’re watching a play, my guess is the whole thing seems to be shot on a greenscreen so they are keeping the screen behind them and performing to the hard cam. Probably the same size crowd as an AEW show as well… hayowwwww!
I knew what to expect but as a Power Rangers fan I was interested in what exactly the story was gonna be and how deep into the PR lore they would go. While the story is pretty by the books as Jason fights to maintain the line in a failing war against Rita. The city is burning and things don’t seem to be going well. Rita is probably the best part of the film acting wise. Working heel is always a little easier and the over the top cheese works for Rita, it’s kind of her thing. Behind that though the lore is pretty solid and Zordon gives us some backstory on the power coins, how they were created and where the power comes from. Goldar even has his backstory from the Boom! Comics and a simply fantastic knight costume. If the movie wasn’t as bad as it is Hasbro may be making a call or two. It’s insane Tubi would even put this on their network. I would be equally as interested in a Making of Doc breaking down the production and Tubi deciding to allow it on their network. So maybe check it out before it’s gone. It’s only like an hour long but hey! If you had only one hour left to live this may be the best way to spend it as it will feel like 5! Jason literally says the line “I need you to transmit my audio to any working device that may be working in the area”.
If you’re a Power Rangers fan and need a good laugh, fire up your free Tubi machine and settle in for something that even makes the cringiest of Power Rangers look like The Dark Knight. Zordon has a double chin!
