Scene of the Week: Best of the Best bar fight
I love a good bar fight in an action movie. Sometimes it’s the easiest way to introduce the eccentricities of the cast and have a great brawl at the same time. Best of the Best (1989) has one of my all-time favorite bar fights and it stars Chris Penn; those are two major positives in my book.
If you’ve not seen Best of the Best (what is wrong with you?) or maybe you somehow missed one of the best tournament martial arts fighting movies ever made (open your damn eyes!) then I’m gonna give you an opportunity to check out an inconsequential scene just to wet your appetite for more.
Sporting an awesome cast including Eric Roberts, Phillip Rhee, Simon Rhee, a thinned down Chris Penn, and James Earl Jones, Best of the Best spawned three later sequels that took it in a very Die Hard-like direction, but this first incarnation doesn’t include Russian mobsters, white supremacists, or little green men from Mars and it’s still the best of the best in my book.
