Women of Action: Danielle Harris – Hatchet II
Keeping with our Scary Good Action theme surrounding Halloween, let’s take a look at the 2010 sequel to one of my favorite slasher flicks of all time; Hatchet II. Let’s do this!
The Marybeth Dunstan that you remember from Hatchet is gone. Partially because actress Tamara Feldman doesn’t return as the character but also because Marybeth has transformed from the victim of the first film to the badass heroine of the sequel.
Hatchet II picks up just as the first movie is ending. Actually, with the cliffhanger-style ending of Hatchet, the sequel is a direct continuation. We see Marybeth facing down against the killer Victor Crowley and living to tell the tale. She swims and limps her way back into New Orleans to talk to the voodoo man Reverend Zombie (played by Tony Todd) and to get a posse of sorts together to go back out to the swamp.
The film begins to tell more of the origin story of Victor Crowley and I felt that it dragged the movie down a bit. There is nothing wrong bringing it back to the beginning but I really just wanted more Marybeth action. The crew of rednecks and hunters get pretty excited about finding the mythological Victor Crowley and the money that Rev. Zombie promises them when they return. Only Zombie knows what is going on out in the swamps and there is a good chance that most of these guys won’t walk out of the swamp under their own power. If you haven’t yet watched any of the movies in this series then you can expect massive violence.
