5 Questions: Ninja III: The Domination
The toughest part of doing a 5 Questions post on Ninja III: The Domination was narrowing it down to 5 Questions.
This movie will make you question pretty much everything. Especially everything you knew about ninja movies.
A quote from the Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films documentary may have said it best… “Ninja III: The Domination managed to take The Exorcist, a ninja movie and combine it with Flashdance“… Who can even conceive a script like that? And that’s not even one of the official 5 Questions…
1) Why does the ninja at the start of the movie have “guyliner” on?
So this ninja shows up on a golf course and starts killing people for no apparent reason other than the fact that he can. He is credited as “The Black Ninja” even though he’s wearing green. But my biggest question is the “guyliner”. If anyone can pull it off and still be deadly it is a ninja that can throw a throwing star with his foot!
2) Why did Lucinda Dickey give “The Black Ninja” more trouble than an entire police force?
In The Black Ninja’s defense he had been shot about 316 times by the time he encounters Lucinda Dickey’s character, Christie. But she is able to fend him off and he even surrenders his sword to her. Was it beauty that killed the beast?
3) Did Jordan Bennett get the role of Billy Secord because of his body hair or despite it?
Bennett is approaching George “The Animal” Steel level of hairiness. A great look if you are an over the top professional wrestling brute… not the best look if you are the love interest of the leading lady in a movie. It worked for Secord though, after attending one aerobics class with Christie and cutting a promo on her on the drive home, he won Christie’s heart. Unlike George Steele, whose love for Miss Elizabeth went unrequited.
4) Is there some sort of Dollar Shave Club for Ninjas?
At the start of the film, The Black Ninja goes into a cave where all his ninja weapons are stored. He stocks up so he can go on his golf course killing spree. But later in the movie, when Christie, possessed by the spirit of The Black Ninja, goes to the cave the stock of throwing stars and other assorted ninja weaponry has been replenished. Which leads me to believe there has to be some sort of Dollar Shave Club like program for ninjas to automatically receive replacement blades, stars, etc.
5) Is there any other trilogy in movie history where none of the movies have anything to do with the other?
Cannon’s ninja franchise is a unique animal. It started with Enter the Ninja, which was followed up by Revenge of the Ninja and what would end up being the third and final installment, Ninja III: The Domination. The only thing all three have in common is Sho Kosugi, but he plays a different character in all three films. I know that John Carpenter wanted his Halloween series to be like this, completely different stories with a common Halloween theme. Well where he failed Cannon succeeded.
