Scene of the Week: Street Fighter – Ken & Ryu vs Sagat & Vega
Quick, try to think of a good movie developed from a video game. Chances are you’re either failing to come up with a single good one, you’re trying to convince yourself that the Resident Evil movies are good, or you’ve seen a video game adaptation that I haven’t. No matter which of those categories you fall under, the fact remains that film and video games franchises should be much better at this point at getting their stories across on the big screen.
My first thought always goes back to 1994’s Street Fighter. As a massive fan of the early video games, Street Fighter should have been a homerun of a movie. How could any studio make such a stinking turd of a film with the amount of money they poured into it while other fantastic films like Bloodsport exist in the same universe. They even got Frank Dux to play Guile! Despite Street Fighter being a terrible game adaptation and not a very good movie, it does have a certain charm to it by the sheer audacity of some of the casting choices and I think that the fight scene below is one of the reasons that I can go back and re-watch the film over and over again.
