Scene of the Week: Remo Williams
In 1984, to prepare for its centennial celebration, the Statue of Liberty was closed for renovations. The Statue would be surrounded by the world’s largest free-standing scaffold to allow a crew of workers to repair Lady Liberty… the scaffold also lent itself to being one of the most unique set pieces in the history of cinema.
1985’s Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins was able to take advantage of this moment in time filming a scene on Liberty Island that would become synonymous with the film.
I would like to point out that some restrictions came along with Remo Williams shooting on Liberty Island. The Statue itself was off limits, but the scaffolding surrounding the Statue was fair game. To get around this, an exact replica of the Statue of Liberty from the bust up was constructed in Mexico (where much of the non-New York sequences were being shot).
Thanks to movie magic, you would never know that this week’s Scene of the Week was shot in two different countries. Also, thanks to our friends at the Ultimate Action Movie Club for uploading this iconic scene to YouTube, as we see Remo Williams take out some hired goons who tried to make the Statue of Liberty the site of Remo’s demise…
