Bullet Points: Parallel
Do you remember the TV show, Sliders? It starred Jerry O’Connell and each week his team would travel to parallel universes. I remember one episode in particular. Jerry was at a stop light, and the light turned green, but no one moved. That’s because in this particular universe, green meant stop, and red meant go. Although the universes are parallel, each was just a little bit different than the other. This brings me to my latest review. The movie is Parallel, and let’s see what happens when you travel to other universes. I’m sure nothing at all will go wrong.
- The Plot: If you haven’t guessed it already, Parallel is all about parallel universes. A group of friends find a magic mirror, and this mirror takes them to other universes. Of course, this travel impacts each person differently. The film I would compare Parallel to is the original Flatliners. When you keep doing something you shouldn’t be doing, eventually the consequences catch up with your actions. Parallel stars Martin Wallström, Georgia Key, Mark O’Brien and Aml Ameen. You might not recognize the names, but each of these actors have been featured in something you’ve probably seen. Parallel is directed by Isaac Ezban. He is a noted director from Mexico. Parallel has been completed for some time. It played at selected film festivals over the past couple of years, but it is getting its official VOD and Digital release date in the States on December 11th.
- The Mirror: We have a group of 20 something tech people. They create apps and other tech gadgets. They accidentally find the mirror, and they go and take a look. Time travels differently in different parallels. Seconds in our universe, could be hours in another. What do you do when you have an impossible deadline? Easy, you do your work in the other universe, and jump back, and you’re ready to go. One thing you never do: Do not run into your double! Could you imagine running into another version of yourself? That would freak me out. This mirror also has a story behind it. Clues that should warn these people to stay away. But, we wouldn’t have a movie if that happened.
- Sci-fi Fun: I enjoyed a lot about Parallel. It does take its sweet time to get going, but once it does, it is one helluva thrill ride. The acting is great all across the board. The direction is first class. Parallel is simply a good movie, and it is well worth your time if you are in the mood for something not quite the norm.
Bonus Bullet Points…
- Pizza Pizza: How many pizzas do you take to another universe when you have a major deadline? I think the answer is 30.
- Written by: Scott Blaszak. This is the only movie he has written.
- Familiar Faces: Look for Breakdown’s Kathleen Quinlan, Ray Donovan’s Alyssa Diaz and Homeland’s David Harewood in supporting roles.
- Short haired Mona Lisa: If you ever wanted to see the Mona Lisa with short hair, then Parallel is the movie for you.
