Scene of the Week: David Sloan vs. Tong Po
In 1991, a sequel to Kickboxer was released but there was one key ingredient that was missing… the star of the original 1989 movie, Jean-Claude Van Damme. That’s because Van Damme opted to make Double Impact with his friend Sheldon Lettich instead of returning for the sequel, leaving a massive void to fill. Enter Sasha Mitchell.
Mitchell played David Sloan in Kickboxer 2: The Road Back, the younger brother of JCVD and Dennis Alexio’s characters from the original. With the exception of being a skilled martial artist, David was nothing like his older brothers, which is a part of David’s story in the movie. Mitchell brought his own unique vibe to the franchise and it worked so well he ended up portraying David Sloan two more times.
The Sloan may have been different, but Kickboxer 2 ends up in similar fashion to the original with a bloody fight between David Sloan and Tong Po (who was played by the returning Michel Qissi). This week’s Scene of the Week takes a look back at that fight as David Sloan with the guidance of Xian Chow (Dennis Chan) and support of Sloan family friend Jack (John Diehl) takes on Tong Po, who is backed by the evil Sanga (Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa), keep your eyes peeled for Director Albert Pyun favorite Vincent Klyn as well.
