Scene of the Week: Krull
World building has always been my jam. I really dig it when films, especially ones made way back in the year 1983, spend the time to deliver a world that is unique but sort of familiar at the same time. Movies like Star Wars, Dune, Conan the Barbarian, and Excalibur did so with varying success. Some of those I mentioned were based on books and the hardcore fan would probably say that the movie was an abomination compared to the literary works, but I’m lazy. I’m not going to read every single thing that comes across my eye and I certainly don’t have enough sober hours in the day to read epic shit like these.
Krull is exactly the type of thing I’m talking about. A brand new world that is weird with its creatures and magic but still familiar with its hot Lysette Anthony and random Liam Neeson. Krull has all of the elements of a medieval flick with its castles and knights with sweet capes but it also contains lasers and shit and a cyclops dude who throws a friggin’ trident! Throw in Skeletor and it could’ve been Cannon’s Masters of the Universe prequel. Okay…now I’m just getting out of control. Stop reading now and watch this swashbuckling-ly good scene below.
I really liked the look of the Royal Guards. Shame none of them survived to accompany the Prince. The film is unjustly neglected; it’s a great dark gothic fantasy.
I agree. So many of these 80’s movies could have made excellent toys back in the day! Get on it Toy Man!!
