Ryan Shoots First: What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?
It is finally here we have been building up to it all season but this week in the What If …? season finale the Watcher will finally break his oath. On the heels of last week with Ultron tearing apart the very fabric of the multiverse the Watcher had no other choice but to retreat to Evil Doctor Strange’s tiny-verse.
The episode was a pretty fitting finale with everyone from the season coming together to face a massive threat in Ultron. Ultron is easily the toughest villain we have seen as he can wipe out planets in an instant. Doctor Strange served as a worthy adversary to him to somewhat level the playing field as the What If strange is immensely powerful. Captain Carter herself however seemed to be the emotional core of the team as she is the grounded character we can relate to the most in this show of cosmic superheroes. Her relationship with Nat was nice to see as it filled in for the relationship Nat had with Steve, but you know more BFF like. I really enjoyed the show over the entire season and liked the overarching narrative that carried across the season but within seemingly unrelated episodes. The Watcher is a fun character that presents a lot of complexities similar to ones the Eternals will have to face in their movie next month. Pretty much a “uhhh dude where were you?” dynamic. I noticed a lot of people online throughout the season getting bogged down with canon this and canon that obsesses over various rules. That totally misses the point of the show. This was a fun medium to tell new stories and introduce new angles on established heroes… and yes probably sell a lot of Funko Pops, Lego sets and Hot Toys.
SPOILER ZONE
I really thought Widow was going to be re-inserted into the proper MCU, I suppose the recent ugly court battle with Scarlett Johansen made that return to the MCU unlikely. Shame, would have been a perfect way to introduce a very different but cool version of Black Widow. I was a little bummed to not know more about the Gamora-killed Thanos universe where Tony was working with her in a massive suit. SO many questions there. If you hung around for the mid-credits you also saw that the Hydra Stomper is still around but does that mean there is a old Steve Rogers inside? Will we find out? Is there going to be more Captain Carter coming? The premise and experiment seemed to work so it will be interesting to see what Marvel does with these new heroes they created and invested in. Doesn’t seem likely to just retire the Guardians of the Multiverse.
Observations
- Crazy after all those changes Cap still ends up on the Numerian Star.
- I need to know more about this reality…also the “Not you stark”
- Why would he want Killmonger other than we’ve already seen him in an episode.
- Guardians of the Multiverse… cool
- Oh man I need Captain America to meet Captain Carter like yesterday
- I don’t know if he’s called Party Thor… but he’s Party Thor.
- Very cool touch with the Zombie horde
- Oh wow ok let’s give these two some time.
- The head bouncing back and forth between the shields was awesome.
- Nice take on the Avengers shot
- Hurry get the stones before you just have Zola Stoned Big Bad
- Again, why did anyone bring him??
- So who takes Widow with them? I mean they can’t just leave her alone as the only human on this planet.
- Man, I really thought he was going to send her to the proper MCU timeline.
