Bullet Points: Army of Thieves
Army of Thieves will premiere globally on Netflix on October 29, 2021. Should you give it a watch?
- The Plot: Army of Thieves continues the Army of the Dead Universe. You might remember a lot of people viewed Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead when it landed on Netflix this past Summer. The main point you need to know about Army of Thieves is it is a prequel to the events in Dead, and its focus is on safecracker Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer). Dieter is recruited into a heist crew led by the charming thief Gwendoline (Nathalie Emmanuel). Along with the rest of the crew, they set off to pull 3 of the most daring heists imaginable. There has to be a reason why Dieter was so responsive and eager when Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) asked him to join his dangerous mission in Army of the Dead. If you watch Army of Thieves, you should be able to get all the answers you need. Army of Thieves also stars Stuart Martin, Ruby O. Fee, Guz Khan and Jonathan Cohen. Matthias Schweighöfer also serves as the film’s director, and it is written by Shay Hatten. Don’t worry Snyder fans, Zack teams up with Hatten to develop the story, so of course, the movie has elements of a Zack Snyder inspired world.
- Why Dieter?: Army of the Dead had its moments, but it was mostly uneven with a bloated runtime. The Dieter character was a bright spot in my opinion, and you could make a case that he is the most likable character in Army of the Dead. Dieter’s fate is still possibly up for debate as well, so the events and characters we meet in this prequel make everything in this Cinematic Universe a bit more interesting.
- Heist Over Zombies: If you watch Thieves for the zombies, you will be disappointed. Thieves is not a zombie movie, but a heist flick with action sprinkled throughout. You will not see any carnage. Hardcore action fans might want to tread with caution when deciding to watch or not. If it makes you feel any better, I do believe Thieves is a stronger film than Dead.
- Final Verdict: Dieter is one of those characters you can’t help but like and cheer for. If you were a Dieter fan after Dead, you should be a Dieter fanatic after Thieves. Once again the runtime stretches, but it is still more polished than Dead. Army of Thieves helps this new Cinematic Universe envisioned by Zack Snyder instead of hindering it. Check it out!
