Bullet Points: Invincible (2020)
Johnny Strong and Marko Zaror star in the action thriller, Invincible. Look for Invincible on DVD, Digital and On Demand from Lionsgate.
Invincible also stars Michael Pare, Sally Kirkland, Vladimir Kulich, Krissada Sukosol, and May Myatnoe. Invincible is directed and co-written by Daniel Zirilli. It should also be noted that Johnny Strong is credited as a co-writer and he composed the musical score feature throughout the film.
Invincible is one of those movies that sat on the shelf for some time. It has been finished since at least 2019. Right now it has a 3.6 score on IMDb, but it only has one critic review at the time of this writing. I can not figure out why Invincible sat on the shelf for so long. Trust me, I have seen a lot worse.
- A Little Bit of the Plot: We see a lot of Die Hard clones, but how many Universal Soldier clones do we get? Well, we have at least one with Invincible. Marko Zaror is a soldier left for dead that gets pumped with some juice that turns him invincible. The only person who can stop him is professional bodyguard / badass Johnny Strong. Who will be the last man standing?
- Who Should Watch?: I am a member the prototype demographic Invincible should attract. I am a Johnny Strong fan, and I like Marko Zaror too. Johnny Strong is such a multi-talented actor / musician. He is one of the rare talents who acts, writes, and makes music. Strong’s best work is done with frequent director, William Kaufman. While Invincible isn’t Strong’s finest hour, he still gets to act like the macho badass he is. The masculinity elevates to the max when he enters the room.
- Breaking It All Down: Invincible is somewhere between a Bruce Willis DTV and something Jesse V. Johnson or William Kaufman would direct. The plot is more like something that would star Luke Goss. Most of Daniel Zirilli’s films are about the same. So you should know what you are getting into.
- The Action: Uhhh, the action is the best when Strong and Zaror are going fist to fist. It is shot in a way that makes it look realistic. The gunplay is middle of the road. I am not sure if it was practical or CG, but to my eye, it looked more CG. The blood splatter looked like Microsoft Paint, but it could have been the equipment used to shoot the film. Some might say the highlight regarding the action is all the food Zaror eats. That’s definitely straight outta the diner scene from Universal Solider.
- The Story: Probably the weakest part of the movie is the plot, but that’s like watching a late night movie on Cinemax for the story. I do think a lot will be turned away by Invincible being a bit too wordy. Some of the action is done off camera, and Johnny Strong goes full emo grunge rock a few times. It didn’t bother me, but I feel it might bother the average action viewer. I also feel the movie just ends without a definite conclusion. Did they run out of money? What is the deal?
- Wrapping it Up: Invincible is a middle-of-the-road action movie that still has a good chance to appeal to fans of Johnny Strong and Marko Zaror, but perhaps, it also makes the viewer wish they were watching both actors in other roles with a different story and director.
- Grade: C+
I really hope Johnny Strong’s career takes off. I know he’s been a handful of movies since ~2000 but the dude is so supremely talented that it’s frustrating seeing him so sparingly in movies.
Warhorse One with Johnny Strong and directed by William Kaufman looks promising. It will be released later this year. Yes, he need more Johnny Strong! I’m guessing it had to be his choice not to act a lot. He has the look and the swagger of a super star
