Bullet Points: Switchblade Sisters
It’s a known fact that I love watching people get revenge, but more importantly I love it when it’s a gang of girls getting even. Turn the ladies into a gang of street hooligans and throw director Jack Hill (Foxy Brown and Coffy) behind the camera and you know this movie is going to be badass!
- The Premise: The Dagger Deb’s have a run in with a new girl named Maggie in town at a greasy burger joint. She is a take no shit pretty girl that sparks a friendship with the gang’s leader Lace and quickly becomes a member. When Lace’s former right hand woman Patch begins to feel threatened that Maggie’s role in the gang may be a bit more important than hers and she instigates a shit storm of jealousy. The rest of the girls begin to question whether their loyalty should stay with Lace or with the highly motivated Maggie.
- Unintentional Romance: There is a scene where Lace tells her boyfriend Dominick, the leader of the Silver Daggers, that she is pregnant. His response is very heartfelt. He yells, “You got knocked up? (pause) Big deal!” He then throws a wad of money at her crotch and says, “Here, you know what to do with it.”
- The Goods: Girl prison riots, gang warfare, a shootout in a roller rink, nudity, hilarious dialogue, and a decent amount of action. What more can you ask for from a story about a group of tough inner city hood rats that carry switchblades and rumble harder than the guy gangs in their neighborhood?
- Death Wish 3: Though it’s a different style of film, the all-out war between The Dagger Debs and their boyfriends in Silver Daggers, other rival gangs and the police feels like the end of Death Wish 3 when Paul Kersey is running around and blowing shit up.
- Final Thoughts: The next time your girlfriend is breaking your balls to watch a chick flick with her, do yourself a favor: put on The Switchblade Sisters. Explain to her that It’s a story about a friendship between two girls and their struggle to live a better way of life. A sort of love story and a tale of hardships. Then sit back and enjoy the film.
