Bullet Points: Kung Fury is here to kill Hitler!
This installment of Bullet Points will not be sticking to the format that I’ve been using for the past year or so, but that shouldn’t come as any surprise as the film it’s based on has been destroying the status quo since it was first announced by writer/director David Sandberg in December of 2013. Kung Fury has become an internet phenomenon with its emphasis on over-the-top 80’s action, a killer soundtrack, and a laundry list of crazy ideas smushed into a 31 minute runtime. If you’re a lover of that special brand of cinema that we feature here on the site every day, then you need to clear out a few minutes and plop your ass down and watch this film. The original trailer had me so excited for it that I think I dribbled a little in my pants. I don’t like to make many guarantees in life but this movie is GUARANTEED to put a smile on your face. *note: not all faces will have smiles.
- Knight Rider loves it: David Hasselhoff’s music video of the theme song “True Survivor” released in April and has already amassed over 10 million views. That is a shitload of views for anyone, especially a man who hasn’t done anything noteworthy since Pam Anderson’s first implants were still fresh. It says something about how “meta” this movie with its marketing campaign that its able to become so popular amongst youth while featuring “The Hoff” in its video and characters like Hackerman and Triceracop in the film. It’s brilliant to say the least.
- Kickstarter domination: With 17,713 backers, Kung Fury was able to raise over $630,000 during its Kickstarter run. Initially, the goal was set at $200,000 in order to finish post-production on the film for a 30 minute runtime but later a stretch goal of $1 million was set for a full feature-length film. Sadly, that goal was not met but this story may be much more suited for a shorter runtime than a full 90 or so minutes. If the making of the film didn’t teach you this, then the film itself should be enough to remind you that anything is possible with the power of a computer.
- WTF: Flaming baby carriages, killer arcade games, Kung Fu experiments, time travel, laser raptors, a dinosaur that shoots people in the dick; a random list of words or stuff that you’ll see in Kung Fury? What do you think?!?!
- Yeah, that’s my bicep: Chris Hemsworth plays a pretty good Thor in all of the Marvel movies but he never flexes his pecs once. What a waste.
Kung Fury is not the first independently developed short film to get a massive following and blow up the internet the way that it has but damn it if it isn’t entertaining. Being the lover of 80’s cinema that I am, I can’t point to just one thing that I loved the most about Kung Fury. I always knew that knowing Kung Fu could mean the difference between life and death and when you put that power into the hands of a cop you’re gonna get nothing but the best one-liner spouting, leather jacket wearing, sun-glasses at night sporting badass the world has ever seen. Hitler doesn’t stand a chance!
Teamwork is important!
