Beautiful and Deadly: Women of Spartacus
Like most of you out there I also find myself scrolling through Netflix trying to decide which series to begin anew. I have dozens of titles loaded up in my queue but it never seems the right time to start shows like Borgia or Sons of Anarchy. Well, recently I finally made the leap with Starz’ own Spartacus and after sitting through four seasons of gladiators killing (and sexing) each other I’ve made a very simple determination on the show as a whole; Spartacus has an insane amount of scantily clad and bare-assed women!
Why didn’t anyone ever tell me that the producers had fashioned the show equal parts sword fights and sex scenes? That seems to me like one of the biggest selling points. I guess it is left up to me to deliver such information and it is one job that I will do with a smile on my face. So check out just a few of my favorite female warriors and Roman nobles who graced the screen for Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.
Jenna Lind could make even the filthiest pile of rags look sexy as she goes from the personal slave (and lover) of Roman Marcus Crassus to a follower of Spartacus and his rebellion. While she mostly stays far from the battlefield, Kore plays a very important role by the end of the series.
Gwendoline Taylor plays the unbelievably cute Sibyl, a slave who is saved by the Gladiator Gannicus. It’s a move that turns out to be his sharpest victory as it causes Sibyl to follow him around like a puppy for the remainder of the series, and what I wouldn’t give to have Gwendoline Taylor follow me around. Weird stalking aside, Sibyl plays savior to Gannicus and his boozing/whoring ways as the legions of Marcus Crassus bear down on Spartacus and his army of former slaves.
Anna Hutchison already won me over in The Cabin in the Woods and she continues to impress as the slave-owning Roman turned castaway Laeta. What very well could have been a throwaway role was turned into a character which warranted some actual emotion (how dare you?). Even the great Spartacus himself had to take notice of Laeta’s beauty and compassion.
Ellen Hollman makes her second Bulletproof Action appearance to date and this one blows her other out of the water! Ellen plays the intense warrior Saxa who kills with her knives and seduces with her luscious looking body. Saxa isn’t a character to be f*cked with on the battlefield but it would be unlike me not to mention that Saxa’s relationship with that lucky bastard Gannicus had my eyes glued to the screen.
I hope that having Katrina Law and Anna Hutchison both on this list doesn’t turn into a cat fight….*wait for it…damn* since Law’s character Mira also became the love interest of Spartacus. With so many love interests for a guy who was fighting this war as vengeance for his dead wife (remember) Mira is far from a one-note character. Shamefully the writers decided that absent her relationship with Spartacus Mira was no longer of use since they neither give her any further screen time and they attempt to replace her SPOILER shortly after her death. As beautiful as Laeta was, her character wasn’t as strong as Mira’s so I am firmly entrenched on #TeamMira!
