Scene of the Week: Blood and Bone
This Tuesday, November 10th, we’ll celebrate the birthday of the action film star and martial arts master Michael Jai White. I’ve written about his film Blood and Bone once before and if you’ve seen it or any of his other films you will know that White is an absolute boss when it comes to fight scenes.
Michael Jai White’s best attribute, aside from his martial arts prowess, is his ability to earn your favor simply by appearing onscreen as the man that he is. He doesn’t really play outlandish characters or attempt anything way out of his wheelhouse, but his humble persona bleeds into all of his characters and forces you to not only root for him as a character but to actually like the actor behind the proverbial mask even more.
Blood and Bone gave MJW an opportunity to play the Clint Eastwood-like character of Isaiah Bone. He had a pretty rad name for a hero but he could have easily not had one at all and I would have been happy with it. He rode into town with a plan and he whooped just enough asses to accomplish that plan alongside his good buddy Rufio. Seriously, this movie had some surprising and sometimes confusing cameos. Dante Basco, who played Rufio in Hook, giant MMA/Pro Wrestler Bob Sapp, Youtube fighter and former MMA’er Kimbo Slice, and a brief appearance by my girl Gina Carano.
The fight you see below features the suit-wearing Matt Mullins as he tries to take out the underground fighting badass Michael Jai White. Is the suit really a good clothing option for a fight? Probably not. But neither are cowboy boots and jeans and Chuck Norris pretty much kicked the shit out of all things evil in the state of Texas wearing them.
