The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (S1 Ep2) “Adrift”
The episode opens with Galadriel floating in the sea probably wondering what the hell she’s going to do now. Because it is fantasy she doesn’t die from hypothermia but instead just starts swimming the other direction.
The Harfoot gal is also standing at the site of the fallen star (homeless man). Nori is her name and she’s just bound to get all of her people in trouble. She takes care of the giant man, who is probably Gandalf, and feels a great amount of responsibility in doing so. I’m sure the rest of her people will feel the same way when they find out….
It’s hammer time for Elrond as he goes to visit a former friend in Prince Durin, a Dwarf prince who has something that the Elves will need if they are going to build the tower/forge that they want. I have a strange suspicion that this will all lead to the forging of the rings and the downfall of Middle Earth?
All the while, Galadriel is still just swimming away. I bet she would give Katie Ledecky a run for her money! She runs into a shipwreck full of people who got attacked by a worm. She attempts to hide the fact that she’s an Elf but they discover her pointy ears and then the worm reappears and wrecks their shit.
A strange relationship between Elrond and Durin. He’s butt-hurt that Elrond hasn’t been around for his wedding and the birth of his children. What the hell is going on here? Lots of talk about Sophia Nomvete as Princess Disa but she is very good. It shouldn’t mean a thing that someone has darker skin when they’re playing A MAKE BELIEVE CHARACTER FROM A MAKE BELIEVE RACE.
Arondir and his lady love Bronwyn are back. They make their way to a nearby village and learn that all of the humans there have disappeared like some sort of Middle Earth Roanoke Colony mystery. Arondir sends her back and heads into a tunnel to find the culprits. The far more interesting parts are when we get back to the human village and see how no one wants to believe they’re in trouble and are more relieved that the Elves are finally gone. It leaves Bronwyn to mostly have to deal with things herself. I say mostly because her son is far more adept at handling the situation than I would have ever imagined and the two of them make for a pretty damned good team when up against a goblin.
Galadriel’s story is the least interesting to me, at this point. She’s definitely going through some shit. She’s on a blood quest to get revenge on the orcs and Sauron even though she hasn’t seen them in some time. Now, she’s cruising around the open seas trying not to get eaten or drowned by a storm. There’s also a half-naked wizard dude out in the woods who talks to fireflies and an Elf who just got captured by what I assume are goblins. The relationship between the Elves and the Dwarves is starting to pick up and that can only mean trouble. I certainly think that this second episode is better than the opening one as we’ve gotten much of the introductions out of the way. With this many characters, though, it seems like every scene has someone new to meet and we never really get a story moving forward smoothly. I’m still enjoying it enough to keep going and I’d love to hear what you guys think about the show so far?
