Bullet Points: Kuffs
Who here remembers when Christian Slater was the next big thing ? He was the bad boy that all the teenage girls loved in Heathers and he was in both Young Guns 2 and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. That awards him a certain level of coolness from me even though he starred in two movies with what could be the worst titles in history: Pump up the Volume and Gleaming the Cube. Some people may not be able to look past those garbage-titles but if you give it a chance, Kuffs will entertain you for sure.
Synopsis: Despite his big brother being in law enforcement, George Kuffs (Christian Slater) has never considered it a potential career for himself. That changes when his big bro is killed and George inherits ownership of his department. Instead of selling it off, Kuffs decides to track down the guy who killed his brother and save the day.
If You Like Beverly Hills Cop: This movie is not only a very similar movie to the Beverly Hills Cop series but some of the same music is used for Kuffs as well.
Screen Print Badass: Kane must have customized that awesome shirt he was wearing with his face on it. He’s an entrepreneurial villain.
Break the Walls Down: Not only is that a Chris Jericho reference but it’s also a reference to Christian Slater constantly breaking the fourth wall during the film. It was one of the unique qualities about the movie that set it apart from others like it.
Hey, I Get it: Your name is Kuffs and you’re a cop !
Your Art is Weak: The whole art heist part of the plot was a total miss in my opinion. They could have just as easily made the bad guys be drug traders or gun runners and the threat would have seemed much more severe instead of it just being a bunch of nerds stealing shitty paintings.
Music to My Ears: I love the old school lyrics that describe exactly what is happening in the movie as it happens. That always felt like such an 80’s thing to me.
Favorite Quote: “I’m looking for a really big gun that holds a lot of bullets.”
The Verdict: Christian Slater was a borderline superstar back in the Kuffs days. He was most certainly in his prime here and if you’ve ever enjoyed his films then you neeed to see this one. He really was the white Eddie Murphy, just not as good. The comedy keeps the film on the lighter side even though there are some character deaths but in the end Kuffs is a really fun movie with just enough action to wet your whistle.
