The Six Shooter: Comic Book Heroines

“Spartan women give birth to real men!” The Queen of Sparta speaks these bold words to a Persian messenger shortly before his demise. Gorgo commanded respect from her people and her husband. She went to great lengths to protect her people even at the risk of her own health. And though she was a regal queen she had no fear to get her hands dirty. This was much more evident in the 300 sequel “Rise of an Empire” which fails terribly in comparison to the original in my opinion. Never the less I like the Queen enough to throw on this list.

 5. Abigail Whistler (Blade: Trinity, 2004)

 I know right out of the gate that I have to start this off on the defensive. Blade: Trinity was not a good flick to say the very least and Whistler’s daughter wasn’t even all that great in it other than the fact that she was portrayed by Jessica Biel. But this ranking is entirely based on what might have been. You see back in 2004 there were a lot of rumors that the Night Stalkers were going to get a film of their own. The idea of a vampire action flick running on the power of Ryan Reynolds’ Hannibal King and Jessica Biel’s Abigail was an exciting proposition. It would have continued the Blade series of films and would have given Marvel a chance to expose the movie going public to some of their more unknown characters years before they actually went with that strategy. Oh well, what might have been…

 Hit-Girl is a bad chick! She has extensive knowledge in guns, knives and pretty much all things that can hurt a human being. She is a 10 year old girl vigilante with no filter and she has no problem taking a life. Hit-Girl is more than enough for anyone to handle. Unless you’ve read the comics you only know a little about this dangerous preteen. But if you see things the way I do you know that she is driven to say the very least. The way that she was able to move forward in the first film in the last scene we see Big Daddy in is incredible. The second film is in a lot of ways Hit-Girl’s film.  I enjoyed both films and I truly hope that this isn’t the last time we see Hit-Girl on the big screen, Also does anyone else see a little Damian Wayne in Hit-Girl? Having said that I don’t want to start a Hit-Girl vs Robin fight.

  3. Mystique (X-Men films 2000-current)

The X-Men films have had their ups and downs though out their time. Some were solid and some should have never seen the light of day (take your pick on which ones you like and which ones you hate.) But whether you like all of the X-Men films or not, Mystique has always been a pretty solid character. Mystique has amazing powers and stands out in many ways. If she wanted to be Mystique could be easily one of the most dangerous characters in the X-Men universe.  And while we’re not sure were Bryan Singer is headed with the series, Mystiquie could very well become that dangerous character. Luckily with the upcoming release, X-Men: Apocalypse, we’re going to find out.

Here is a crazy thought. Picture with me if you will the first time we see a red headed, green eyed secret agent for S.H.I.E.L.D. in Iron Man 2 and it is not Scarlett Johansson but rather Emily Blunt! No offence to Ms. Blunt but I don’t think I want to be in that world. Granted back in 2010 it probably wouldn’t have been a big deal, but now Scarlett has definitely put her stamp on the Black Widow character. At this point a big part of why I continue to enjoy the Marvel movies is because of Black Widow. Her action scenes are always fun. If you are a wrestling fan you see some lucha elements in most of them. And when you mix her fighting prowess with her easy going personality, it always makes for a good cinematic experience.

  1. Catwoman (Batman Returns, 1992)

Keep your Anne Hathaway Christopher Nolan. She’s not bad but it is just not the same. And don’t even ask about that waste of time Halle Berry was in, myself and a friend laughed all through that movie ,so at least there is that. My Catwoman sewed her costume out of a vinyl jacket, smashed neon lettering on her wall while an answering machine played messages from her mother. Arming herself with sharp finger nails and a whip she set out to kill the Batman! This version of Catwoman was brought to life by Michelle Pfeiffer. Of all the females characters in the Batman cinematic universe I dare anyone to show one more iconic than Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. She left a lasting impression on Bruce Wayne and left us all counting her lives at the end hoping she had one left and we would see her again. Sadly that ship sailed and the next Catwoman we got spent her time fighting off a villain with really good makeup.
