Scene of the Week: Death Proof Beatdown
Quentin Tarantino has been pumping out excellent films since he first arrived on the scene. His style isn’t for everyone but for anyone who likes the random dialogue and graphic action scenes that he brings to the table you really can’t get much better than a Tarantino movie when it comes to the sleaze that he brings. It’s likeable sleaze, but it’s still sleaze. Most of the characters that we love from his films are the ones with a whole slew of morality issues. That is also reflected in the film that today’s Scene of the Week is born from; Death Proof. Sure, Death Proof isn’t nearly as good as Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs but even as QT’s worst movie, it’s still better than most of the crap you’ll find out there today.
I actually liked Planet Terror more than this one but that was mainly because it had Tom Savini and Michael Biehn in it. Put those two cats in any movie and I’m gonna watch the hell out of it. The main issue I had with Death Proof is that it moves at such and an incredibly slow pace that by the time the finale finally comes the viewer is sitting there with a bladder full of pee and just can’t wait till it’s over so they can take a piss. At least that’s how I felt but I do frequent the types of movie theaters that serve alcohol so I’m forced to live with my choices.
Death Proof has all of the Tarantino foot fetish, female empowering, killer music that all of his other flicks employ but this one also has one of the most badass car stunts in movie history. Throw in Kurt Russell and you have yourself a pretty solid flick.
Sorry about the multiple clips below. I didn’t have time to load up the full scene myself and I’ll only search around so long before I give in and post whatever I can find.
