Bullet Points: For Your Height Only
There are a lot of movies in the James Bond franchise but that hasn’t stopped me from seeing all of them multiple times. The countless knock-offs and spoofs are a completely different story. I usually just opt to watch 007 when in the mood for spy action instead of something different. I have dipped my toes in non-Bond water a few times but since it has been far too long I decided to give Weng Weng a chance because I’ve heard so much about him. The diminutive Filipino actor’s second outing as Agent 00 was in the spooftasticly titled For Your Height Only.
- Agent 00 – Weng Weng plays Agent 00 but he is also called Weng during the movie so there is no confusion. Weng Weng was only 2ft 9in (83 centimeters) tall but that doesn’t stop Agent 00 from measuring up to 007. Right from the beginning we learn he is every bit of a super spy with, which includes out in the field and with the fairer sex. In fact, Weng Weng’s martial arts skills are probably superior to any of the actors who played James Bond which gives Agent 00 an added bonus.
- Mr. Giant – The plot of For Your Height Only also would fit in with any James Bond movie. There is an evil super villain who kidnaps a scientist that created a weapon that can destroy the world. Mr. Giant is the main bad guy, but we don’t see him until the very end. He talks to his henchman through a mirror that lights up and is a neat effect… for the time. Mr. Giant also has Agent 00 captured at one time only to see him easily escape. Now with a name like Mr. Giant and the hero being a little person, what are the odds that the name is ironic?
- Gadgets – Any self respecting spy better have some gadgets and Agent 00 is no exception. He is fully decked out with a ring that detects all poisons, a specially built and right sized hidden gun, an pendant that is a two way radio, a trick belt buckle, x-ray glasses (peep those secretaries), a freakin’ jetpack and the piece de resistance, a remote controlled bladed had that simultaneously looks like it would make Oddjob jealous and looks like it comes with a free bowl of soup. It looks good on Weng Weng though. When you show all these gadgets you can only hope to see them in action and For Your Height Only doesn’t disappoint.
- Weng Girls – James Bond films have to have a love interest and strong female characters and Weng Weng gets in on the action. From the opening where he helps out a prostitute when see that Agent 00 is a man of few words, but his words are powerful. The main female character is Irma, a fellow spy that is undercover in Mr. Giant’s organization, who is very lucky that Weng Weng is on her side.
- Fights – What makes Weng Weng special is his martial arts skill that he brings to Agent 00. Not being very tall he uses his lack of height to great advantage. Be prepared to see lots of low blows and escaping through legs and under tables. I don’t think anyone but Weng Weng would be able to use an umbrella as a parachute when jumping out of a building. All the action scenes are the highlight of For Your Height Only and you will probably see some fights you haven’t seen before. Except when Agent 00 uses a gun. He can’t miss. It is almost too easy for him.
As someone who has seen all the James Bond films countless times I can say that For Your Height Only cannot compete. That doesn’t make it not worth watching. I was incredibly impressed with Weng Weng’s fighting skills, and equally unimpressed with his onscreen charisma. That storyline fits right in with any James Bond film, but just not executed nearly as good or entertaining. All the familiar beats are there, they just don’t add up to me wanting to watch multiple times like 007, but I do want to check the other films in the Agent 00 series. - Soundtraxx – The music, like the Bond films, is a highlight. In fact it is heavily influenced by the James Bond Theme. For Your Height Only loves the music so much it constantly plays the same few songs.
